This painting is a larger version of a painting I made for my 3-year-old after he got very sad about a little blue flower getting cut down in a book. Creating that piece made me think about how quickly my kids change, and how badly I want to remember my sensitive little boy who sheds tears over a flower. 

Which brought me to this piece. We often think about forget-me-nots as flowers about lovers and longing. But this painting is about the space a mother’s heart creates for the countless versions of her children she watches come and go. Each one precious and worth immortalizing. 

I hope this painting makes you grateful for the gift of time—because contrary to the popular narrative that it’s a thief, every day we get to enjoy watching them grow is a gift.
