California poppies open in sunlight and close against the cold. While painting more than a thousand of them across this canvas, I kept returning to that idea—turning toward what sustains us.
We live in a constant stream of information, much of it heavy and draining. It is easy to absorb more than we realize, and sometimes we don’t notice its effect on our mindset. But our attention is something we have control of. We can choose, at least in part, what we orient ourselves toward.
The poppy is sometimes called the “cup of gold.” I think of that less as a symbol and more as a question: what are we holding, day after day? What are we letting fill us? I hope this painting serves as a reminder to fill your cup with what is true, lovely and pure.
